Grow From Seeds

Growing squash and courgette from seed

Large seeds, fast growth and a taste for warmth. Start indoors a few weeks before the last frost.

Sowing

Clemson Extension gives 3 to 5 weeks from sowing to transplanting for squash, cucumbers and melons, so do not sow too early.

Sow one or two large seeds per small pot, covered to the depth on the packet, in a warm place. Peat pellets work well: they swell in water and take the seed once opened.

Plant out after the last frost, hardened off.

Tips

  • Squash and courgettes rot easily in cold, wet mix.
  • Acorn squash is usually grown outdoors; indoor growing is a workaround for short seasons.

Always check the packet for your variety, and see the step-by-step guide for the basics.
