About Grow From Seeds
A plain guide to the technique of growing from seed, with sources you can check.
What this is
Grow From Seeds covers the parts of seed-starting that are the same whatever you grow: what to sow in, how deep, how warm, how much light and water, how to harden off and plant out, how to save your own seed, and what to do when something goes wrong. Each guide says where its advice comes from, and the figures it gives are taken from the Royal Horticultural Society and from university extension services.
What it is not
It is not a plant-by-plant encyclopaedia. For that, and for places to buy organic and heirloom seed, see its sister site organicseedfinder.com.
How we handle sources
Where a number appears (weeks to transplant, germination temperature, hardening-off time) it comes from a named source on the sources page. Where we give a rule of thumb that is not from a source, we say so. Frost dates and growing conditions vary, so check your packet and your local conditions.
