Sowing
Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a native of the Indian subcontinent and likes heat and a long season, so in cool climates it is best started indoors and given a warm, sunny spot.
The seed you cook with is usually hulled or toasted and will not grow. Buy seed sold for sowing.
Tips
- Un-hulled seeds are beige and stronger in flavour; hulled, washed seeds are creamy white. Light toasting brings out the nutty flavour.
Always check the packet for your variety, and see the step-by-step guide for the basics.
