Grow From Seeds

Growing parsley from seed

Slow to start, then generous. It is a biennial, so in its second year it runs to seed.

Sowing

Sow in spring and again in summer. Germination is slow, often several weeks; keep the mix evenly damp and be patient.

Sow where it will grow if you can, as parsley dislikes root disturbance.

Tips

  • Once it bolts (flower stalks appear), the leaves become bitter. Cut the flower stems off to keep using the plant, or let it seed and collect the seed.
  • Sow fresh plants each year.

Saving the seed

Allow the flower heads to ripen and dry on the plant, then cut them into a paper bag.

Always check the packet for your variety, and see the step-by-step guide for the basics.
