Grow From Seeds

Growing dill from seed

A feathery herb that is best sown where it will grow, and easy to save seed from.

Sowing

Sow direct in spring and after, in a sunny spot. Dill dislikes having its roots disturbed.

Sow a little every few weeks to keep leaves coming.

Tips

  • Plants will flower and set seed; leave some for the seed.

Saving the seed

Wait until the flower heads have dried and turned brown, and the seeds are dark with a stripe.

Harvest on a dry day so damp seed does not go mouldy. Cut the heads into a paper bag; if damp, leave to dry. Roll the heads between your fingers to release the seed.

Let the seed dry indoors for a few days before storing in an airtight container.

Always check the packet for your variety, and see the step-by-step guide for the basics.
