Grow From Seeds

Growing chilli (and peppers) from seed

Slow to start and needs warmth and a long season, so it is one of the first things to sow each year.

Sowing

The RHS lists chillies among the crops to sow in late winter because they need a long season. Clemson Extension gives 8 to 10 weeks from sowing to transplanting for peppers.

Seeds germinate best warm, so use a heated propagator or heat mat, and good light afterwards.

Tips

  • Pot on as they grow; peppers sulk in cold, wet mix.
  • Harden off for two to three weeks and plant out only after the last frost, or grow in a greenhouse.

Always check the packet for your variety, and see the step-by-step guide for the basics.
