How many pound of the following herbs can I expect?
Question by : How many pound of the following herbs can I expect?
This summer, I am wanting to grow the following herbs:
-Sweet Basil
-Calendula
-Chamomile
-Dill
-Fennel
-Lavender
-Lemon Balm
-Lemon Catnip
-Lime Balm
-Lovage
-Marjoram
-Mints
-Oregano
-Sweet Violet
-Tarragon
-Thyme
I’m wondering how many pounds of these herbs I can expect. I know that this is based on many many variables. For example, lets just say I planted 100 basil seeds and every one of them sprouted. Lets say that I harvested twice over the summer, and they produced an average amount. How many pounds can I expect?
Even if you only know for one or two of these herbs, your answer is greatly appreciated.

This is greatly dependent upon your area of the country and how much you WANT to produce…and whether they will grow well, or even at all in your region.
Basil is a huge producer, so only a few plants will produce alot of basil for you.
Dill also produces alot as well, although it depends upon whether you’re producing dill for the herb or the seeds. Watch for black and yellow striped butterfly caterpillars on your dill!
Fennel doesn’t grow well in my area, but in areas where it grows well, it produces similar to dill.
Mint is also a prolific producer too. Catnip is also a type of mint. DO NOT PLANT MINT IN THE GROUND! Unless of course, you want it to spread all over the area where you plant it. It can become an invasive weed in places you don’t want it, and difficult to remove once it’s found a home, so most people will suggest you plant it ONLY in pots.
Marjoram, Oregano and Thyme can grow very well too. They tend to do best in partial sun/shade. A little of these goes a long way, so you probably don’t need to grow much.
Tarragon doesn’t grow well in my area, so I can’t say how it will do for you.
Lavender blooms only in early and late Summer for the most part, so you’ll only get a little bit from each plant.
Some you didn’t choose…Sage and Savory grow rather well and produce alot of leaves. Also Rosemary…rosemary can grow to the size of a 6-foot tall by 4-5 foot wide bush. One rosemary plant should do well for you.
